Located in the central area of the island and roughly 20 miles from Honolulu, Mililani offers lush landscapes in a relaxed environment away from the city. It was Oahu’s first planned community and in 1986, it was named All-America City, the only community in Hawaii to ever be named. Used to be plantation farms, the area is made up of Mililani Town and Mililani Mauka, separated by H-2 Freeway, with Mililani Town to the West and Mililani Mauka to the east of the freeway. Mililani Town has its first homes built in the late 1960s and benefited from the completion of H-2 Freeway in 1976, reducing the commute time from Mililani to Honolulu in half. Mililani Mauka marketed its homes in the early 1990s and is the more upscale neighborhood in Mililani. Because of its proximity to the mountains, it is also cooler and a bit more rain than Mililani Town. Most of the retail outlets are located in Mililani Town, which includes Mililani Marketplace, Mililani Shopping Center, and Town Center of Mililani. It also has 2 golf courses, Mililani Golf Club and Leilehua Golf Course (military but open to the public).
To the north is Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Dole Plantation, and the famous North Shore.
